I am rating this book as an adult reading the book. I enjoyed the play on words, pun and references the book provides. It is written for a sixth/seventh grade reading level, but the content to me is more high school level. There is a great deal about dealing with what hell is verses what heaven is supposed to be, being well versed on several religions there are references to different ideals of what theses are taught to be like. A lot of the references would be lost on a younger generation because they are from the seventies to the nineties. But I find this often in young adult fiction. Overall, I was very entertained by the book, but could not reccomend it for a young adult under 14.Tags : Heck: Where the Bad Kids Go [Dale E. Heck Where the Bad Kids Go Dale E Basye Bob Dob 9780375840753 Books Reviews
Excellent for 10 year old
An odd story, but a fun one. The story of a boy sent to Heck because of his sister's activities, schemes to escape.
This is a hilarious take on the afterlife... for bad kids. What if Dante had been 12? What would hell have been like for him? Like an elementary school in permanent detention? I'd like to think so.
The premise of this book amused me, so I bought it, thinking I might read this to my fourth grade students, but decided they wouldn't get the jokes. I tried out a few ideas with them, such as "Why is it funny that Richard Nixon is teaching ethics, or that the home ec teacher is Lizzie Borden (who wields an ax.)" I was amused, but the jokes will go right past them.
I came across this book while reading an Archie & Friends comic book from a while back. I found it kinda funny that instead of H. E. double hockey sticks they called it Heck. The book was well put together. I didnt know what was coming next and how the kids would react to their different situations. I fell in love with the book and would love to buy the others (the different levels of heck).
This book deserves five stars because at forest i thought it would be for kids younger than me but then i got bored with . It wasnt until the other day i remembered i had it. I would reccomend this to anybody who enjoys a little adventure in their novels/books
Basye has created not only a clever and witty book, but it's also an interesting take on the historical references for hell. There are many pop culture references, and it would be laugh out loud funny in many parts if you as the reader didn't also feel like you were stuck in this terrible place called Heck. Ultimately, though, I was a bit disappointed in the story because it never really grabbed me as a reader, and although there are a plethora of imaginative characters and circumstances, they often go by too quickly and don't give enough description or connection to the scene to make it feel palatable.
