Selah Rishon Chavez is haunted by dreams of the Sorrows, when the country was decimated by all manner of destruction, from nuclear explosions to natural disasters. But those events that changed her world forever occurred long before her birth -- over a hundred and fifty years ago -- and so she buries the fear and questions the vivid dreams foster. She has more immediate concerns: just days from her eighteenth Birth Remembrance, she's been pledged to marry a man she hasn't seen since childhood. Loathe to see her future slip away in the bonds of an arranged marriage, Selah longs for the freedom her brothers possess, to join the family business collecting bounties on the Landers who wash ashore near their village.

But one morning, everything changes when Selah witnesses her brother kill a Lander. Shocked by the senseless waste, Selah vows to discover why her marriage of convenience is so important to her family, determining to fight tooth and nail for the freedom to choose her own future. Driven to spying on her own family, Selah uncovers a tangled web of secrets involving fuel payoffs, mysterious genetic research, and ancient manuscripts -- pieces of a puzzle that seems impossible to solve in time to prevent her marriage. When she sees her father commit a shocking act of violence, Selah decides to throw caution to the wind. Forget consequences -- she'd take what freedom she had left and live life to the fullest...but her brave rebellion may cost more than she could ever dream.

Released as a precursor to Thunder, the first book in Bonnie S. Calhoun's new dystopian series the Stone Braide Chronicles, Tremors introduces Selah and her world. While many e-book bonuses stand alone well as fully-realized short stories, this reads more as a deleted opening to the full-length debut to come, raising more questions than answers. Calhoun packs this "story" -- consisting of four short chapters -- with information, introducing the concept of Landers, the Sorrows, and sinister genetic research, but without much context or depth. There is so much going on here, I was left craving some good world-building, which one assumes will follow in Thunder (and raises the question of why this intro was even needed, though I expect it was likely a publisher decision).

That said, I love seeing an established house like Revell dip their toe in the ever popular young adult market for dystopian thrillers in the mold of Hunger Games. While this intro is far too brief to get a good grasp of Selah's character, her moxie and drive to achieve self-determination is promising, very much in the spirit of Katniss and other heroines of her ilk. The concept is interesting and the world-building holds promise -- I particularly can't wait to discover more about the Landers and why they are hunted. On this excerpt's merits alone, I think it would've served better to include this story in the full-length release, but as a teaser I am undeniably intrigued to read Tremors.

TREMORS
By
Bonnie S Calhoun

Book Description
In this gripping prequel to Thunder, unsettling secrets change Selah Chavez's life forever in the days before her 18th Born Remembrance.

My Review
Tremors is a very interesting prequel to Thunder and is a teaser that has no ending. It has been written to introduce some of the characters and draw you in to reading the first novel in the series, Thunder, which releases at the end of September, 2014. I have to admit that I'm not much of a fantasy fan but I wanted to read something new and different, so this is a different genre for me. The story line seems a little difficult to follow and doesn't make a lot of sense to me from this prequel. However, I am hoping to get the first book in the series (Thunder) so I can make a better understanding of the storyline.
I would recommend this to those who are interested in a fantasy type e-book.
May God grace engulf your life, Bonnie. In Jesus Name Amen.

About Author

I love to write, but it doesn't make me happy unless there are the three B's...body count, blood, and blowing things up. I also have mad skills at coding HTML, and website design. I live in a log cabin in the woods with fifteen acres and a pond full of bass, though I'd rather buy fish at the grocery store. I share my domain with a husband, a dog, and two cats, all of whom think I'm waitstaff!
I RECEIVED THIS EBOOK FREE FROM AUTHOR IN RETURN FOR MY HONEST REVIEW
This short prequel starts off with three young surfers sleeping on the beach at Hilton Head, NC. Something happens!

We are then introduced to Selah Rishon Charez who has just had her third dream of death by a big wave. The dreams only come when she sleeps on the beach. Selah is being "forced" to marry Jericho Kingston in just over 90 days. Why is her father so keen on this union and why has he banned her from going to the beach before her 18th birth remembrance in two days?

Where does an ancient manuscript come into play? Selah is confused when she overhears talk of epigenetics, boy babies only and initiation. Who is Backus? What is Selah's plan?

Obviously this is a TEASER and has no ending. It has been written to introduce some of the characters and draw you in to reading the first novel in the series, Thunder, which releases at the end of September, 2014.

It is a well-written "book" and does include the first chapter of the full novel Thunder. If this type of storyline is one of your preferred reading genres then I am sure you will enjoy this.
Tremors is a very interesting prequel to Thunder, a book that will be released later this month. I have to admit that I'm not really sure if I am a "fantasy" book fan. This is a new genre for me. The story line seems a little difficult to follow and doesn't make a lot of sense to me from this prequel. However, I am anxious to get the first book in the series (Thunder) so I can make a better judgement.

It starts off with 3 young men being the only persons on a beach that is usually teaming with people. They are pulled under by a huge wave. Then it segues to Selah, a young lady that has visions that she doesn't understand. She only has the dreams when she falls asleep on the beach. And they seem to be connected with the destruction of the earth, 150 years ago. Then there's Selah's marriage plans arranged by her father to a man she doesn't know. This planned marriage brings even more mystery with it as Selah overhears her father making plans with the father of the man she is to marry.

Quite a trail of mystery to be solved in the first book of this series.
