Lint Boy Aileen Leijten Books Reviews

Lint Boy is a charmingly stylish graphic novel that will appeal to all young readers eager to see a spark of life in the smallest speck of dust. This is a visual treat, from it's cream colored color palette and it's stylized borders to it's whimsical characters. It is the art that makes this story fly, and it the beautiful illustrations that push this effort up to four stars.

This story is certainly well intentioned, but it comes across as rather confusing. I loved the devotion between Lint Boy and Bear, and was captivated by the idea of their life in the dryer. The timelines in the narrative are jumbled, and young readers will surely be wondering about some really odd leaps. It's a great idea, just not a great execution. Still, kids will likely love it just because it's about a little guy made of lint. The artwork alone is well worth the price.
"Gently Gothic" is used in the description, and I'd say that's a perfect combination of words for this book. It's definitely in the darker realm, but it's so very gently so at times that it comes off super corny. (The villain names are Tortura and Mrs. PinchnSqueeze. Mrs. PinchnSqueeze tortures the dolls by banging on their cages with a stick. These sessions are called "Rattle and Battle".) I'd only recommend this for younger children because of the corniness factor. I imagine older children might roll their eyes a bit too often.

Aside from that, and the fact that this is an incredibly odd book, it does have a cuteness factor to it, too. If one can get past the odd and corny parts, it's pretty enjoyable. I loved the artwork. It has a softness to it, which possibly keeps the book from seeming more creepy.

Overall, I'd recommend this book for younger readers that like a bit of silliness, mixed with a bit of gothic.
Lint boy is a book cut from a different cloth... It has elements of heroics, and a very very strong sense of sharing, togetherness, loyalty, and forgiveness. Which makes it a good book in my opinion. The antagonist is a woman who has wanted to prove dolls are alive since she was a child (in this book, they are of course), and is slightly demented about torturing them into revealing their true nature.

This combination paints the backdrop for a story that is kind of unique, with sweet characters weaving their way through a group of hermit socks, scared and disillusioned other dolls, and a mildly abused dog who acts as the old woman's accomplice.

Overall I think its a great little story. I was surprised at how long it was, and that the author went into some backstory for some of the dolls. This suggests to me that its a book the bridges two audiences. Its a bit like a comic book - not quite for small children, but also not for older kids. I think maybe it would be best for kids who are not quite ready for "graphic novels" but need a cute quick read.

I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of feeling and emotion that was worked into the story.
This was a very unusual comic-like story. The illustrations are awesome, very expressive and cute and unique. I loved the dangerous adventure of lint boy and his cuddly brother lint bear. The fact that the monster in this story is human and not some fable creature provided a dark undertone. Despite the fantasy quality of living dolls and socks, it shows that such mean creatures really exist in our world.

Children may not yet draw that line from fiction to reality, and after finishing the book my son immediately asked why the old woman was so mean and what made her so. Unfortunately, the book does not offer much explanation in that regard, and even the ending was only an escape from that answer. As it is, it leaves room for your own imagination and thoughts, which can be a good thing as well. However, I recommend to read this book together with your child so you are able to discuss it afterwards and help them draw their own conclusions.

A different and thought-provoking variation of the hero vs. monster theme which shows that more can be achieved if you have friends and hold together.

(Thanks to Netgalley, the author, and the publisher for a copy of the book, all opinions are my own)
I had to go back and fourth between four and five stars because I didn't think the ending of the story lived up to the uniqueness and quirkiness of the first half, but I had to go with five because of the wonderfully playful and satisfying illustrations. The images are stylized and almost sepia which gave it a sense of timelessness. The illustration panels are handled well, making each page interesting. Although there were a couple times it made the visual flow a little of, but the visual interest was great. The characters, especially the villain as a child, were fantastic. It was not Rembrandt, it is stylized, but I truly feel that it created the perfect mood for this tale.

The story definitely started out strong and developed characters. It's quirky, but the main villain was nicely filled out and Lint Boy was a decent protagonist. The story definitely has enough quirks to propel you along. But I have to admit I was not completely satisfied with the straightforward resolution of the story. I felt the strong quirky ending deserved a stronger, quirkier ending. Can't say what that would be, but I wished there was a bit more twist in the ending.

That being said, I cannot wait for the kids to get their chance to read this. It is perfect for mid year readers, 8-12 who would appreciate it strangeness and it's fairytale like qualities. Despite my small problem with the ending, this definitely falls under 5 stars.
My 8 yr old favorite book now!
