Jilting the Duke The Muses' Salon Series Rachael Miles 9781420140866 Books

Aiden and Sophie were young lovers before his father bought him a commission and she was married off to his friend shortly after he left for the war.
He is out for revenge after she returns to England(a widow)with her son. He has also been told to watch her as it is suspected that she may be a spy or have carried in papers that are spy-related. As they try to unfold that mystery, their lives and motives since their initial time together unfolds showing them a future.
I was unsettled because all the i's weren't dotted and issues were left undone. It was very good writing, but I like my reading tied up in a neat package, rather than pointing to more of the series to find resolution I so dearly want!

Jilting the Duke The Muses' Salon Series Rachael Miles 9781420140866 Books Reviews

A very enjoyable read. The characters are well developed and the plot has enough mystery to keep me reading. I have now read 2 of this author's books. I am on to the third and looking forward to any others that she writes.
I haven't been this excited since I discovered Grace Burrows. This was a perfect book to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon reading. Great characters, wonderful plot, very believable . I'm often thrown out of the story when authors use phrases that are modern or have their character talk about things that don't belong in world she created . This was a seamless story I didn't want the book to end.
At the heart of this series are smart, fascinating women that Iove spending time with. All the books in this series all have a bit of all the things I like in a historical--including some spies and intrigue mixed in with the second chance at love. Miles isn't afraid to make things emotionally complicated, but it makes the ending that much more satisfying.
My first time reading Rachel Miles and I know it won't be my last. Was desperate for something good to read as I'd recently been reading only passable books and by browsing my I found this gem. Well written and .....just great. Don't take my word for it, go on and read for yourselves. I've found a new author.
Others have posted summaries, so I'll jump straight to my critique. Both tautly plotted AND character-driven, Jilting the Duke is an engrossing read. The key players are well-rounded...sometimes frustratingly stubborn and/or remote, often extremely likable, and ultimately quite believable...while the villain is unexpectedly (and gratifyingly) sinister. Featuring plenty of twists and turns, the multilayered plot satisfies even demanding readers. This isn't "just" a light romance; it's an engaging tale that happens to involve a love story. Miles's historical accuracy delicately enhances the story's Regency flavor without sacrificing pace to heavy-handed detail. In short, Jilting the Duke is an excellent debut novel. I'm ready for the second installment!
This book is both smart and fun -- pleasure reading for those of us who enjoy the romance genre and don't want to leave our brains behind. The author's historical knowledge is both extensive and handled with grace and a light touch you'll enjoy the context without feeling overwhelmed. The comments from readers who don't appreciate the detail must not understand either its relation to the plot, or the simple fact that some of us like to be immersed in the setting. That's why we read historical novels!!! I love the way she integrated the "language of flowers" -- I found some of that information on the author's website -- but no, you don't have to look that up to enjoy the book. Don't skip the author's note at the end you won't fully appreciate the hard work and creativity that went into this novel without it.
Well-written, captivating story that's not the usual Regency romance, even though I guessed early one about the main "reveal." Not sure, in real life, if the H would have remained unmarried 10 years after he thought he got jilted. But..the other elements and events felt pretty on point with the period. Still, even after reading entire series, still not sure what was up with the villain, Charters...Really liked the heroine. She was no pushover, and she dealt extraordinarily well to a lot of setbacks in her life. I'm not sure I would have been as forgiving as she turned out to be, regarding the H's missteps and misunderstandings, which largely were due to his oversized ego. But that said, all felt true to life. Women didn't have a lot of options back then, and she dealt pretty well with the troubled hand she was dealt.
